Healthy workforce, healthier bottom-line
How many days do you lose annually from staff calling in sick? And how much of this is down to "stress"? Apart from duty-of-care considerations, there are a host of reasons why employers should take steps to tackle stress.
Leaving stress unchecked can escalate costs for an organisation. Not only does it have implications for productivity, attendance and staff turnover but, if allowed to run rampant, it can also result in legal action, with the potential for uncapped settlements and damage to an employer's reputation.
The scale of the problem is demonstrated by the Health and Safety Executive's (HSE) 2006/07 survey of Self-Reported Work-Related illness, which revealed that 13.8m working days were lost to self-reported work-related stress, depression and anxiety. And that each case of work-related stress, depression or anxiety-related ill health led to an average of 30.2 working days lost. The HSE also estimated that the cost to the UK economy tipped more than £530m.
Some Hard Facts to Swallow:
- It is estimated that 50,000 strokes could be prevented each year if people had their blood pressure checked regularly.
- Raised blood cholesterol is a factor in nearly half of all coronary heart disease cases.
- Individuals who are overweight have a 50-100% increased risk of premature death from all causes, compared to individuals with a healthy weight.
- Approximately 1.4m people in the UK alone have been diagnosed with Diabetes. Even more crucial, an equal number are estimated to have diabetes but are unaware of it.
